Set in 1994, during the week Kurt Cobain’s death reverberates through the culture, Class Clown follows Nelson, a sheltered, homeschooled boy entering public school for the first time. Enrolled in a “shadow” program, Nelson is assigned the exact schedule of Joe, a socially effortless, well-liked student who reluctantly becomes his guide. Determined to disappear into the background, Nelson instead draws attention at every turn. His awkward attempts to fit in transform him—unintentionally—into the class clown. As Nelson’s behavior isolates him both at school and at home, his classmates elevate him into a strange, fleeting kind of celebrity. But when a teacher forces him to stand alone in front of the class, Nelson is confronted with a defining moment: his first chance to act independently, without a script, and in full view of everyone.
